Tàiyáng mén is a temporary outdoor art installation for Sanya Haitang Bay, displayed to celebrate the Chinese New Year from January 24 to March 15, 2025.

On an open field in Haitang Bay, and on a light slope towards the water, eight huge gates are positioned in a line facing west. Visitors approach the site from the east, mostly at evening hours when the sun sets. The landscape with its surrounding hills and vegetation resembles a natural amphitheater.

The installation is a celebration of light and wind, a processual walk in the landscape enhancing and enjoying the play of the natural forces. The gates play and resemble an abstraction and iconic reduction of the collective memories of temple gates and traditional local fabrics displayed in the wind.

Each gate measures 11,40m x 5,40m and displays a 40m2 plain red fabric moving in the wind. On the ground, huge mirror panels, resemble in an abstract way the local fabrics by the Li People and reflect their patterns on the curtains.

Visitors can walk freely along the 120m long installation, experimenting and enjoying the changing views and constantly shifting play of the installation in the wind and sunlight.

Tàiyáng mén
