project description:

Anjuzhen is one of China´s few ancient cities, a small village remaining almost intact and unaltered by the pressure of progress that razed almost all historic quarters over the last decades throughout China. Located 70km northwest of Chongqing, it is today comparable to a museum town, lacking habitants but animated by tourists that visit the temples, theatres and manors and seize the old streets for a day-trip and vanish at night.

In spring 2017 we were invited to visit the site and to develop ideas for a series of infrastructure facilities in the immediate outskirts of the historic centre, mostly built in the 70ies and esteemed as useless and disruptive to the image the local authorities seek for. The client, a subsidiary of the state-owned CRCC (China Railway Construction Company), is also desirous of focussing the projects on creating incentives for the tourists to prolong their visit and stay overnight. QuanXi Bridge (Clear River Bridge) is one of the three projects we were commissioned to rethink and redesign.

The bridge is a 210m long and spans over Qiongjiang River in a height of 28m. The structure is composed by two concrete decks connected by vertical pillars. The straight upper deck manages the little traffic; the bended lower deck bears the loads transmitted by the pillars. Our design centres on three main actions.

Both decks are intensely vegetated with a variety of trees, bushes and climbing plants converting a mere infrastructure facility for traffic into a landscape project that connects both riversides. The structure permits easily the extra loads and the mild and very humid local climate will benefit the plant growth even in aggrieved conditions.

Those concrete surfaces that remain visible, mainly the ceilings and pillars while not yet covered by climbers, are painted following a camouflage pattern. The colours we employ mimic the selected flourishing colours of the plants enforcing deliberately the pink colour palette.

During night, a dynamic lighting system with thousands of RGB LEDs displayed along the whole length of the bridge, create a series of subtly changing atmospheres turning the bridge´s landscape into a mysteriously vivid jungle where light drops rain from the ceiling. The different light scenes are programmed to be interactive with the local weather conditions and will be visible from the terrace-like sightseeing spots located in town or along the newly created riverbank walk
