The light installation, denominated Laniakea is a site-specific design by commission of the City of Madrid for Plaza Canalejas and Carrera de San Jeronimo coinciding with the termination of the refurbishment and partial pedestrianisation of the area. 

The light installation is dynamic with some light motives subtly shifting colours and others pulsating like stars. The installation is inspired by the images of the nebulae and galaxies realised by the Hubble telescope and the feelings that immediately associate at its contemplation: the hypnotic astonishment facing the immensity of space, the infinity of stars and possible worlds mixed with the recorded memories of the real contemplation of the Milky Way, also present but steadily further away and apparently unreal due to the lack of darkness of the night sky in more urbanised society each day.

Laniakea (immense sky) is the supercluster of galaxies that contains our galaxy, the Milky Way. The different light modules represent all kinds of galaxies, nebulae, stars and comets and, in an outstanding way, the star of Bethlehem.

The installation covers 3300m2 and is realised with a total of 55.000 LEDs summing an installed power of only 4.6kW. The three spheres with a diameter of 1m are lit with 1.800 LEDs each.

La instalación lumínica, denominada Laniakea, es un diseño específico realizado por encargo del Ayuntamiento de Madrid para la Plaza Canalejas y la Carrera de San Jerónimo coincidiendo con la finalización de la reforma y peatonalización parcial de la zona.

La instalación lumínica es dinámica con algunos motivos luminosos sutilmente cambiando de color y otros palpitando como estrellas. La instalación  se inspira en las imágenes de las nebulosas y galaxias del telescopio Hubble y el sentimiento que se asocia inmediatamente al contemplarlos: el asombro hipnótico ante la inmensidad del espacio, la infinidad de estrellas y de mundos posibles mezclado con los recuerdos de la contemplación real de la vía láctea, también presentes aunque cada vez más lejanos y aparentemente irreales por la ausencia de oscuridad del cielo nocturno en una sociedad cada vez más urbanizada.

Laniakea (“cielo inmenso”) es el supercúmulo de galaxias que contiene nuestra galaxia, la vía láctea. Los distintos módulos lumínicos representan todo tipo de galaxias, nebulosas, estrellas y cometas así cómo, de manera destacada, la estrella de Belén.

La instalación se extiende por 3300 m2 y es construida con un total de 55.000 Leds sumando una potencia de sólo 4.6kW. Las tres esferas con un diámetro de 1m son iluminados con 1.800 Leds cada una.
